Spam Filtering and Anti-Virus

At myhosting.com we take Spam and Virus protection very seriously. We have been in the email business for over 10 years. And across all of our inbound email services, we handle millions and millions of emails per day destined for hundreds of thousands of email inboxes. Approximately 70% of all inbound email is considered obvious Spam, Virus or Phishing email and is rejected before being delivered to any mailbox. Only the remainder is considered potentially safe or and is delivered to mailboxes on our servers.

The following system is used to filter spam:

Medium Rating

By default, all email will be scored on a spam scale of 0 to 10. Those emails scoring a 5 or higher are generally considered to be spam, and will be flagged according to one of our four methods.

  • Insert #SPAM# at the beginning of the subject line
  • Insert @#@# at the beginning of the subject line
  • The email is moved to a spam folder and deleted after 7 days.
  • No change to the subject but the spam score is inserted in the Email Header. This allows you to create custom rules to filter email with scores lower or higher than 5.

With a Medium rating we are certain almost 99.9% of the time that the message in question is spam, however to avoid a false-positive rating, we will deliver these emails to your account and allow you to make the final determination.

Very High Rating

All email that we determine to have a “very high” likelihood of containing spam will be deleted before being delivered to your Inbox. With a “very high” rating we are confident that the message in question is definitely spam.

This is determined by verifying things like the message in question wasn’t sent from a legitimate email account, contains dubious solicitations, comes from a known source of spam email or otherwise has a combination of elements that makes it certain that the message is a mass emailing and wasn’t solicited.

This setting can also be over-written on the domain-level to allow white listing of any email server.
